Jewell Galloway Scroggs, 93, a Clay County native passed away Saturday, August 17, 2019 in her adopted hometown of Fairfax, Virginia, following a brief illness.

Jewell was the daughter of the late John Roy and Lona Audrey McClure Galloway. She was the devoted wife of Keith Scroggs, also a Clay County native, who preceded her in death in 1991. She was also preceded in death by her brother, Charles P. Galloway; and sister, Lillian R. Galloway Kelly.

Jewell had a distinguished thirty-year career as a Military Personnel Management Specialist for the Department of the Army. She received several honors, including the Commander’s Award, for her dedicated work serving our soldiers. Additionally, she was a tireless advocate for her husband and son. She enjoyed cooking, crocheting, gardening, and watching baseball on television. Jewell never lost her small-town heart; she never knew a stranger and touched many lives in Northern Virginia with her generous spirit.

Surviving are her only son, John Keith Scroggs and his wife, Anne; and her grandson, Keith Franklin Scroggs, all of Fairfax, Virginia. She is also survived by her niece, Marianne Kelly Godin and spouse, Steven M. Godin; nephew, Steven Kelly; brother-in-law, Joseph G. Kelly; as well as several great-nephews and nieces.

The family received friends from 10:00–11:45 a.m. Saturday, August 24, 2019 at the Ivie Funeral Home, Hayesville. The interment followed at 12:00 p.m. at the Hayesville United Methodist Church Cemetery with Rev. Kirk Hatherly officiating. Pallbearers were Keith Franklin Scroggs, Paul Hedden, Bobby Rogers, Paul Buckner, and Carlton Etheridge.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made in memory of Jewell Galloway Scroggs to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, Donor Services, PO Box 98018, Washington D.C. 20090-8018 or the American Kidney Foundation, Finance Department, 30 East 33rd Street, New York, NY 10016.

Ivie Funeral Home, Hayesville in charge of all arrangements.

John Keith and Anne, so sorry to learn of Jewell’s passing and sorry, too, that we’ll be unable to attend the service today. Miki is having a little surgical procedure in Franklin so we’ll be on the road. Please know that we’re thinking of you and all the good times we shared in the past with Keith, Jewell and all the Scroggs kin. Love, Marcia
