James Crandall Moffitt, age 84, of Hayesville, passed away Friday, May 31, 2019 in a Chattanooga, Tennessee hospital.  He was a native of Clay County and had lived locally throughout his life. Crandall had taught at Nantahala, Ranger, and Peachtree, but had spent the majority of his career at Martins Creek Elementary as both teacher and principal. Crandall had inspired a love of reading and learning with his students. He enjoyed gardening and was well known for his tomatoes, a trait that his son carries on.  Crandall loved trading guns and knives.  He also enjoyed playing checkers and listening to bluegrass music. Crandall had a contagious sense of humor and loved to tell a good joke.  You never saw him without a smile on his face. He was a devoted husband and father.

He was the son of the late Fred Charles and Eula Blanche Eller Moffitt.  He was also preceded in death by a young brother, Javana Moffitt.

Surviving are his wife of 60 years, Joann Cross Moffitt; a daughter, Suzann Ledford and husband, David of Hayesville; a son, Kent Moffitt and wife, Jackie of Murphy; a sister, Minnette Moore and husband, Gene of Hayesville; and a grandson, Justin Moffitt of Murphy.  He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held at 7:00 p.m. Monday, June 3, 2019 at the Chapel of Ivie Funeral Home, Hayesville with Rev. Johnny Foster officiating. Music was provided by Rebecca White and the Pressley Girls. The interment was in Bethel Cemetery.

The family received friends from 5:00-6:45 p.m. Monday at the Ivie Funeral Home, Hayesville, prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made in memory of James Crandall Moffitt to the Kids Food Bag Ministry, Attn: Dorcas Brooks, PO Box 427, Andrews, NC  28901.

Mr. Moffitt was our eighth grade teacher at Ranger School in about 1964-65. He was a sincere, thorough teacher who cared about every student and their success. He was a person and a teacher of the highest integrity. If you ever had Mr. Moffitt, you certainly know how to diagram sentences, which is always helpful in speaking correctly! I send my love to Mr. Moffitt and his family.....Love , Lucy Goodwin

Kent and Family, it was such a great pleasure knowing and working with Mr. Moffitt many years ago at Peachtree School. Mr. Moffitt was such a true gentleman. He always had a smile and great sense of humor. You, Kent, remind me of your dad’s mannerisms a lot. Sending prayers and sympathy to the family. May God grant you peace and comfort as you go through the next few days. Jan Yonce

Dear Moffitt Family,
I never knew a nicer man my whole life. What a model Mr. Moffitt was for everyone around him! What a blessing he was to schools and communities! Scott C said it very well. I am thankful that Mr. Moffitt was part of my life. I often needed to be disciplined in school, and Mr. Moffitt always handled those situations with kind firmness and respect. I saw him treat all students fairly and with love. Though I couldn't fully appreciate him when I was a kid, he was an inspiration for me becoming a school principal. Though I know you will miss him greatly, I ask God to bless your family with the reassurance and happiness that can only be found in HIs promise, and we know that Mr. Moffitt is gone to his great reward, and we will see him there.
