Michael Neil “Mike” Godfrey, 50, of Pine Log Community, Warne died Saturday, June 4, 2005 unexpectedly. A native of Cherokee County, Mike had been living in Clay County for the past two years. He was the son of Bernice “Boots” Gosdin Godfrey of Murphy and the late James Kenneth Godfrey. Mike began his career in Chattanooga, TN at the Raccoon Mountain Pump Storage Project in 1974 and later transferred in 1978 to Hiwassee Dam Hydro Plant, where he was presently working as a machinist. He was director of the Joanna Cornerstone Ministries. He was a member of the Murphy First Baptist Church, where he had been active in the R.A.'s, Brotherhood, and served as a deacon. Mike is presently a member of the Little Brasstown Baptist Church.

Surviving, in addition to his mother, are his wife of 32 years, Karen Wilson Godfrey; a daughter, Christina “Christie” Godfrey of Atlanta, GA; a son, James Michael “Jamie” Godfrey of Warne; and a brother, Tony Godfrey of Brasstown.

Funeral services were held at 7:00 PM Tuesday, June 7 in the Chapel of Ivie Funeral Home, Murphy with the Rev. Aud Brown officiating. Interment was held at 11:00 AM Wednesday, June 8 in Little Brasstown Baptist Church Cemetery. Pallbearers were Randy Dockery, Jerry Payne, Jerry Brackett, Steve Johnson, Stanley Wood, and Marlon Blaylock. Honorary pallbearers were Terry Todd, James Crew, Jerry Morrow, and Hiwassee Hydro Plant Personnel: Melvin Adcock, Charlie Boring, Will Hargett, David Murphy, Jason Neely, Lonnie Starks, David Taylor, Phil Wilcox, Terry Siler, Tom Deweese, David Falls, Roy Goode, Paul Greene, Eddie Hawk, and Tim Seabolt.

The family received friends from 5-6:45 Tuesday evening at the Ivie Funeral Home, Murphy prior to the services.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the Mike Godfrey Scholarship Fund, c/o Joanna Cornerstone Ministries, 17 Valley River Avenue, Suite 4, Murphy, NC 28906.
