Ray Willard McCray, 65, of Hayesville passed away Tuesday, August 27, 2019 in a Henderson County, North Carolina care facility. Ray was a native and lifelong resident of Clay County. He worked as a machinist for Clifton Precision, retiring after 22 years of employment. Ray then went on to work as a maintenance supervisor for Clay County for 15 years, retiring in 2016. He was a member of Fires Creek Baptist Church. Ray enjoyed deer hunting and restoring old Ford trucks.

 

He was the son of the late William Fred and Annie Ruth Roach McCray. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Robert and Charles McCray.

 

Surviving are his wife of 29 years, Carolyn McCray; a step-son, Michael Barnett and wife, Anne of Hayesville; a nephew, Anthony McCray; an aunt, several uncles, and many cousins; and a host of friends.

 

Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, August 30, 2019 at Fires Creek Baptist Church with the Revs. Dallas Crowder and Donald Cook officiating. Music was provided by Diane Crowder and Matthew Roach. The interment was in the church cemetery. Pallbearers were Benny Kirby, Tony Lands, Lonnie McCray, Allen Hayes, Wayne McCray, and Jeff Roach. William McCray and Crandal Ledford served as  honorary pallbearers.

 

The family received friends from 6-8 Thursday evening at the Fires Creek Baptist Church.

 

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made in memory of Ray McCray to the Fires Creek Cemetery Fund, 448 Rebel Lane, Hayesville, NC 28904.
